Ingredients:
1 ½ tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
1 ¼ tsp salt
3 cups all purpose flour
½ cup warm water for mixing dry yeast
½ cup warm water
- Dissolve the yeast in warm water in a cup. Add sugar and mix it well. Keep the cup covered for 10 minutes until frothing appears.
- In a large bowl combine flour and salt.
- Slowly add the dissolved yeast to the flour. Knead the dough by adding ½ cup of warm water. The dough should be smooth and elastic.
- Put the dough in a greased bowl ( grease it with oil). Cover the bowl with a plastic sheet and keep it for 3 hrs or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat oven at 500 F.
- Take out the dough and make small balls. With the help of rolling pin roll each balls into circles. The circles should not be very thin.
- Bake it on the lower rack for 4 -5 minutes. Turn over and bake for 2 minutes.
- Soft, fresh pita’s are ready to eat. Pita’s can be stored for a week in a pantry and for months in the freezer.
