Pita Bread

Ingredients:

1 ½ tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
1 ¼ tsp salt
3 cups all purpose flour
½ cup warm water for mixing dry yeast
½ cup warm water

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water in a cup. Add sugar and mix it well. Keep the cup covered for 10 minutes until frothing appears.
  2. In a large bowl combine flour and salt.
  3. Slowly add the dissolved yeast to the flour. Knead the dough by adding ½ cup of warm water. The dough should be smooth and elastic.
  4. Put the dough in a greased bowl ( grease it with oil). Cover the bowl with a plastic sheet and keep it for 3 hrs or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven at 500 F.
  6. Take out the dough and make small balls. With the help of rolling pin roll each balls into circles. The circles should not be very thin.
  7. Bake it on the lower rack for 4 -5 minutes. Turn over and bake for 2 minutes.
  8. Soft, fresh pita’s are  ready to eat. Pita’s can be stored for a week in a pantry and for months in the freezer.
